Assiniboia’s history

Assiniboia sits beside Highways 2 and 13, about 110 kilometres south-southwest of Moose Jaw. The area was first settled by people of English, French, Romanian, Scottish and Scandinavian descent. From 1908 to 1912 the post office here went by the name Leeville.

The town itself began on 12 October 1912, when the Canadian Pacific Railway put 980 lots up for sale at the townsite as it built a branch line through southern Saskatchewan. Growth was fast: the community was incorporated as a village on 22 December 1912, and in 1913 its population rose from 400 to 1,400 and it became a town. It takes its name from the old district of Assiniboia, in which it lies.

During the Great Depression, town officials put out-of-work men to work building the sewer system, though the town could not afford to run it until 1948. In the Second World War, an airfield north of town served as an elementary flight training school from 1942 to 1944; today it is the Assiniboia Airport.

Today the town is home to Assiniboia Regional Park, founded in 1977, with a campground, outdoor pool and a nine-hole golf course. Nearby Willows Dam, east of town, is a spot for fishing walleye and perch.
